Birth pools are a particularly effective form of hydrotherapy - which is the application of water (usually warm) to ease the discomfort associated with labour and birth. Warm water can increase blood flow, help soften and relax tense muscles, and take strain off of joints and ligaments, facilitating upright, comfortable birth. Labouring in water is associated with less use of epidurals and spinals, slightly shortened labours, and in some studies with reduced risk of tearing (although others showed no difference). It's also very safe - babies born into water show similar Apgar scores as those born on land, and some studies have actually shown reduced admission to NICU for water babies! It's no wonder this is an increasingly popular choice among birthing people.
If you're planning on being in a birth centre or midwife-led unit, the room you're in will likely have it's own birth pool ready to go (some rooms in hospital delivery units do as well!), but if you're planning a home birth you'll need to source your own birth pool. Some people choose to purchase their own, but for many this option feels too expensive and inconvenient (what do you do with it after the birth?). Which is where birth pool hire comes in!
I have a La Bassine Regular birth pool with complete kit (although I'd advise clients to purchase their own pool liner to maximise the sterility of the pool). This is available to all of my birth package clients wishing to have a home birth - I drop the pool with you when I go on call for your birth and whisk it away when you're all done with it. Between these windows the pool is available for hire - check out prices here!
If you're interesting in hiring a birth pool, or using one as part of a birth package, get in touch and we can go over all the details.
