Whether this is your first baby or your fourth, every pregnancy is a unique experience. For some, completely magical. For others, more challenging. Receiving the right support during this time can lay the groundwork for the birth and parenthood journey to come.
A doula is a non-medical support person for pregnancy and birth; I cannot do antenatal health checks, on you or your baby. Instead, I provide education and emotional support to help you navigate your pregnancy. I also provide continuity of pregnancy care - my job is to be a familiar face and hand on your shoulder throughout the process. So what does that look like?
We will meet at least twice during your pregnancy, or as many times as you need to feel confident and to build our relationship (just looking for one off education? Read more about that below).
We will discuss how your pregnancy is going so far, ensure you're receiving all the antenatal support you need, plan for your birth, and also for your postpartum, your feeding goals, and life with a new family member. I will help you explore your preferences, family values, plans, goals, and boundaries within a non-judgemental, zero agenda space. I am a person with whom you can let down your walls, be honest, and rest in the knowledge that I will support you no matter what. If you have any concerns or anxieties about birth or parenthood, we can address these together (including more focused trauma-informed care if needed). I aim to help you tune out the noise and plug into your instincts at this stage. I can also help you advocate for whatever your chosen plans are with your medical team, if you have one. You have the full legal right to autonomy in your pregnancy and birth, and I will be your champion for that from day 1.
I am not here to give advice or make choices for you, and I'm not an advocate for any particular type of pregnancy or birth. I am a firm believer that the best birth is the birth you choose, and that can look very different between families. The perfect birth for you might be someone else's nightmare, and vice versa!
My ultimate goal is to work together to find solutions that feel right to you and your family, to help you advocate for the individual care you deserve, and for you to claim the power to be an informed, active decision maker in your own unique birth story.
Sometimes you might not be looking for the full doula support experience, but you want to be more educated and informed going into your birth. Good news: I offer both one-off and serial antenatal education sessions! These might be one-on-one with just you, or you can book for a group.
A one-off session can be a kind of compressed, whistle-stop tour of the childbearing journey. We'll go through antenatal body changes, how to write and advocate for your birth plan, infant feeding, postpartum recovery, and the "fourth trimester". Alternatively, if there's one particular topic you're interested in (maybe you've been offered an induction and want to know the evidence, or you're concerned about getting breastfeeding off to a good start), a one-off session can a very focused way to explore your particular question.
A serial set of sessions extends and expands on the tour, allowing for individual sessions on each of these topics and a more in-depth exploration of your options and plans.
I aim for you to walk way more informed and confident than you were before, feeling ready and able to advocate for yourself to achieve your goals, whatever they may be.
If taking control of your pregnancy and birth sounds good to you, then let's see if I'm the right person to make it happen!
